Gateway to the WestBy pmihalek

By the time you read this, I’ll be well into my five-hour drive to St. Louis. I’m heading to the STL to check out some of the Midwest’s best garden centers while the holiday season is in full go. The lovely Jennifer Schamber of Greenscape Gardens has graciously volunteered to be my tour guide and the itinerary she emailed me last night is a doozy.

Here’s what’s on tap: Bowood Farms, Greenscape Gardens, Garden Heights, SummerWinds, Hillermann’s, Terra, Rolling Ridge Nursery, and Three French Hens. Oh, and I can’t forget to mention the St. Louis-style barbecue, St. Louis-style pizza, Ted Drewes frozen custard and, last but not least, gooey butter cake. You know what they say, “When in Rome (or St. Louis)…”

The Winner Is…

A week or so ago, we here at Lawn & Garden Retailer received a nice pat on the back — something Mom could brag about over Thanksgiving dinner. We were notified that Lawn & Garden Retailer and its sister publication, GPN, were both medalists in Folio magazine’s Eddie Awards competition. Folio is the magazine for people who publish magazines and the Eddie Awards recognize “excellence in outstanding magazine editorial and design.”

Both publications were honored for Best Full Issue in their respective categories. Lawn & Garden Retailer‘s May 2012 issue was recognized with a silver award. Woohoo! And on behalf of the Lawn & Garden team, I just wanted to thank the expert contributors — Vicki Nowicki, Sid Raisch, Stan Pohmer, Jeanne Pinsoff Nolan and Jonn Karsseboom — who helped make that issue a real winner. Our Custom Media Division also was honored recently by the Custom Content Council in the 2012 Pearl Awards competition. The competition recognized the Custom Media Division’s Creative Garden Retailer custom print and digital magazine produced for Suntory.
