Post Christmas Facebookin’By pmihalek

It’s the day after Christmas and you need something to do. You already had your fill of Christmas cookies and your creepy Uncle Stew. Don’t fret! We have one more present (sort of) for you this holiday season.

Check out the rest of the inspiring garden center photos from my holiday road trip down to St. Louie. Visit our Facebook page to see great ideas from Greenscape Gardens, Hillermann’s and Garden Heights Nursery. And while you’re at it, from all of us at Lawn & Garden Retailer, have a safe and happy New Year!

Pantone Revisited

In our last Retail Report, I questioned the benefits of next year’s Color of the Year pick by Pantone, which happens to be the very green pick of Emerald. I asked you if the “color of the year” actually affects any decision making or provides you any retail inspiration for the coming season.

One of the responses I received came from Chris Murray, garden center manager at Gali’s Garden Center in Beachwood, Ohio.

He said: “I don’t know that in our industry, unlike the fashion industry, Pantone really has any effect on what we do or what our customers are looking for as far as color. I think what happens is that those of us that take notice of this sort of thing then have an opportunity to act on something outside of our normal bubble. It gives us a chance to think about displays and drawing attention to merchandise in ways that may not be usual for us, using colors that aren’t usually associated with gardening.

“Just look at the Valiant Violet floor that we painted at Gali’s. In the past the floor had gone from brick red to green to grey. Purple would never have been an option were it not for us taking note of the Pantone color of the year. That helps show off the merchandise better and differentiate us from our competition. Will emerald green be as exciting? Perhaps not on its own, but maybe we can use it as a starting point to showcase all the different shades of green in gardening. Or complementary and contrasting colors. Even the fashion industry doesn’t just run with the color of the year.”

Chris, thanks for taking the time to explain!
