(Not So) Picture PerfectBy Abby (Kleckler) McGarry

We all know that even if fruits and vegetables don’t look flawless, they are still safe to eat and will taste delicious. But will your customers buy them?

The Ugly Fruit and Veg Campaign aims to share this message with the world. I first heard founder Jordan Figueiredo’s mission of fighting vegetable vanity on the Today show.

You can also check out the campaign on Instagram, where @UglyFruitandVeg has more than 13,000 followers. That’s a lot of people that could change the perception of what makes for appetizing edibles.

Whether you’re growing your own fruits and veggies or strictly selling them, I’d love to know: What are your standards? Do you end up throwing away less-than-perfect produce because customers won’t buy it? Let me know at [email protected].

A Nearing Deadline

For the past 16 years, GPN (Lawn & Garden Retailer’s sister publication) and Nexus Greenhouse Corp. have partnered to recognize an undergraduate student who is slated to do great things in the industry.

The 2016 GPN/Nexus Intern of the Year will receive a check for $3,000; be featured in an article and on the cover of the January 2016 issue of GPN; receive travel and hotel expenses to Cultivate’16 in Columbus, Ohio, next July; as well as a full Cultivate’16 registration.

Click here if you or someone you know should be considered. The deadline to apply is Oct. 21, 2014.

Cheers,

Abby
