More Than MumsBy Abby (Kleckler) McGarry

There’s no doubt your store is looking like fall at this time of the year (and maybe even Christmas is out in full force).

We visited a handful of garden centers near Houston, Texas, two weeks ago, and there were lots of great merchandising ideas for the season. Take a look at the album on our Facebook page.

As Halloween approaches, know that the National Retail Federation expects spending to be at an all-time high this year, higher than ever in the survey’s history. Total spending for Halloween is expected to be $8.4 billion, with consumers averaging $82.93.

Forty-nine percent of consumers plan to decorate their home or yard for the holiday and 46 percent plan to carve a pumpkin.

How are you getting customers in the door this fall? I’d love to hear about successful fall festivals or new initiatives at your garden center. Send me a message at [email protected].

While you’re at it, let me know what new things you’re trying for the Christmas season this year. It’ll be here before we know it!

Know an Intern?

Whether you’re a college student with an internship in the horticulture industry or you know someone fitting this description, it’s time to hear about the GPN/Nexus Intern of the Year.

The deadline to apply is one week from today, Wednesday, Oct. 19.

The 2017 GPN/Nexus Intern of the Year will receive a check for $3,000, be featured in an article and on the cover of the January 2017 issue of Lawn & Garden Retailer’s sister publication GPN and receive travel and hotel expenses to Cultivate’17 in Columbus, Ohio, next July as well as a complimentary full Cultivate’17 registration.

Find out more about who’s eligible to apply.

Cheers,

Abby
