IGC Show 2009 By Staff

The 2009 IGC show is next month — are you registered and ready to go?

From Aug. 18 to 20 at Chicago’s Navy Pier, thousands of independent garden center owners and employees will come together for educational seminars, keynote presentations from industry experts, networking opportunities and products from vendors that cater specifically to this specific market. (And if that’s not enough, how about a free Charlie Daniels concert?!)

In addition to each day’s events at the trade show, there are some great opportunities to broaden your horizons while in the Chicago area. Here’s a look at some of them:

Garden Center Tour

Conducted by Garden Centers of America and the Garden Center Group, this tour focuses on trendsetting garden centers in and around Chicago: Gethsemane Garden Center, Knupper Nursery and Platt Hill Nursery. This opportunity also includes a tour and lunch at Ball Horticultural Company’s headquarters and display gardens in West Chicago, Ill. Also included on the tour is a stop at IKEA’s Schaumburg, Ill., location, one of the company’s largest.

Lunch and bus transportation are included in the price of the tour.

Green Roof Tour

Conducted by Illinois Green Industry Association, the IGC Show’s second tour opportunity is a special showing of leading green roof buildings, many not normally open to the public.

Chicago is famous for its national leadership in the movement to build more eco-friendly green roofs, and planned stops on the tour include City Hall, the Chicago Cultural Center, the Museum of Science and Industry and the Chicago Center for Green Technology.

The office of Chicago Mayor Richard Daley will also welcome the group. A box lunch and bus transportation are included.
