February 2010
New Poinsettias for 2010 By Jasmina Dolce

It’s never too early to start planning for next holiday season, especially if you do your own growing. These new varieties stood out at this year’s National Poinsettia Trials and are sure to stir some excitement at retail.

The National Poinsettia Trials are a collaboration of the research and trialing efforts of three universities (University of Florida, North Carolina State University and Purdue University), one commercial site (Homewood Nursery, Raleigh, N.C.) and five commercial breeders (Paul Ecke Ranch, Dümmen, GroLink, Selecta First Class and Syngenta Flowers).

This year, there were 14 new cultivars introduced at the trials; this is a collection of the varieties that show the most promise. These cultivars should all be available in 2010, but not all new cultivars are listed in the breeders’ catalogs. Contact your supplier if you see one you want to try but it is not listed yet.

Keep an eye out for results of the consumer surveys during the National Poinsettia Trials in upcoming issues of Lawn & Garden Retailer and our twice-monthly Retail Report. (Visit www.lgrmag.com to sign up.)
