ANLA releases 2004 American Standard For Nursery StockSource: ANLA

The American Nursery & Landscape Association (ANLA) recently released the revised 2004 American Standard for Nursery Stock. The Standard was approved by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). According to ANLA the revised Standard is “an essential reference for anyone in the green industry who specifies, grows, distributes, buys, or installs nursery stock.”

ANLA’s strategy for increased compliance includes improved distribution of the Standard. The document can be accessed, free of charge, on the ANLA Web site at www.anla.org. In addition to being able to view and download the document, horticulture schools and state certification programs can print it as needed. A “field-friendly” version, printed on stain-resistant paper, will be available for purchase from ANLA later this year.

Important revisions in the new Standard include :

  • Clarifies how nursery stock should be specified in catalogues, purchase orders, contracts, and bid documents
  • Larger containers (#45, #65, and #95/100) and wooden boxes added to the container classification table.
  • Measurement of B&B root ball depth does not include excess soil above the roots.
  • Recognizes enhanced cultural practices to allow smaller B&B root balls.
  • New requirement to include method of determining caliper measurement for multi-stem trees.
  • New method for determining minimum root ball diameter for multi-stem trees.
  • New tables provide guidance for determining what size container to specify with plant size specification.
  • New system for classifying deciduous shrubs.
  • Larger B&B root ball diameter minimums for many evergreens.
  • New requirement to include “shearing designation” in all evergreen specifications.
  • Examples expanded to include plants common in the Southwest U.S.
