Bachman’s Family Applies to Grow Marijuana

Minnesota is looking for two companies to be the state's only certified marijuana growers, and the owners of Bachman's Inc. plan to apply.

Minnesota is looking for two companies to be the state’s only certified marijuana growers, and the owners of Bachman’s Inc. plan to apply. The garden center, based in Minneapolis, has nothing to do with the application, but some family members have expressed interest, a company spokesperson told the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal.

Startup costs are high, and the growers would need to pay a $20,000 license fee, set up dispensaries and employ pharmacists. Bachman’s has seven acres of greenhouses, so this could decrease some of their initial expenses.

Companies have until Oct. 3 to apply, and the Department of Health plans to pick two companies by December. State lawmakers legalized medical marijuana in May 2014.
