New Varieties Showcase A HitSource: The Farwest Show

The 2006 Farwest Show showcased new varieties, sponsored by Lawn & Garden Retailer, that are in production and available for spring 2007 orders from Farwest Show exhibitors.

There were 38 trees, shrubs, perennials, grasses and annuals that were included in the show’s first-ever New Varieties Showcase and evaluated by celebrity judges for best submission based on the following criteria:

  • Best presentation of the plant specimens supplied.
  • Most possible uses in the landscape or containers.
  • Best information provided to submission committee (photos and descriptions)
  • .

  • Most features for the garden (e.g., form, flowers, fall color, fragrance, etc.).
  • Broadest possible geographic distribution.
  • Most unique compared to the species of other similar varieties.

Weigela florida ‘Verweig’ (PPAF) ‘My Monet’ (pictured) was awarded first place. Introduced by Proven Winners ColorChoice, the variegated weigela garnered attention in the showcase and in the booths of the Proven Winners ColorChoice Gold Key growers where ‘My Monet’ was prominently displayed.

Second place was awarded to the compact euphorbia ‘Blackbird Nothowlee’, a euphorbia with deep-purple foliage introduced by Skagit Gardens Inc.

Ficus carica ‘Violetta’ received third-place recognition. A T&L Nursery Inc. introduction in the United States, the fig offers a generous number of fruit on 1-year-old plants.

Other noteworthy varieties included Ocimum x citrodorum ‘Pesto Perpetuo’, a variegated basil offered by Blooming Nursery Inc., and Isolepsis cernua ‘Live Wire’, introduced by PanAmerican Seed Co.

Polemonium reptans ‘Stairway to Heaven’ from Novalis Inc. and zantedeschia ‘Edge of Night’ from Terra Nova Nurseries Inc. received honorable mentions for the perennial and grasses category.

Rosa x ‘Double Knock Out’ from Novalis Inc. and Hydrangea quercifolia ‘Vaughn’s Lillie’ from Monrovia Growers topped the shrub category. J. Frank Schmidt & Son Co. received recognition for its Acer rubrum ‘Frank Jr.’. Redpointe maple and the attributes of Serendipity Nursery Inc.’s introduction Picea pungens ‘Dave’s Blue Blue Falls’ were appreciated by the judges.
