Perennial Plant Association Announces 2009 Landscape Design AwardsSource: Perennial Plant Association

In 1992, the Perennial Plant Association (PPA) created the Landscape Design Awards to recognize design projects that are exemplary in use of herbaceous perennials to help create balanced and beautiful landscapes.

Years later, the competition is still going strong and open to landscape architects, designs and contractors; educational institutions doing class work; perennial nurseries; and consultants who design, install and maintain perennials. PPA membership is not required. Categories in this year’s competition include residential, commercial, institutional, youth, and temporary or seasonal. Entries will be judged anonymously – on factors including overall quality and creative, effective use of perennial plant material – by a panel of judges based on drawings, photos, plant lists and descriptions.

Here are a few hints on preparing your submission:

  • Demonstrate successful horticultural design.
  • Plant materials and overall quality are central to the program.
  • Mature plantings make a better show. “Just-planted” designs should not be submitted.
  • Discuss significant problems, challenges and unusual situations of the project.
  • Photos showing before and after, as well as work in progress, are helpful.
  • Avoid poor or out-of-focus photos.
  • Photos showing compatibility of plant materials, hardscapes, and textural qualities are helpful.
  • Duplicate all slides, photos, design drawings, and presentation before submission. Digital images or photos are preferred, but slides are acceptable.

Submissions must be postmarked by Feb. 1, 2009. Applicants will be notified of evaluations by April 15. For more information on the Landscape Design Awards, visit the PPA website.
