Saxton’s Garden Center in Plymouth, Mich., is going out of business after 80 years. Alan Saxton, manager of the family-owned store, cited hot weather, a slumping economy and competition from area big boxes as reasons for the closure, reports Matt Jachman.

“It’s a shame,” Saxton said. “We had hoped that things would turn around … but as the summer progressed, it just kept getting worse, not better.”

Jachman notes that closing wasn’t something family members hadn’t been considering, but became an issue after the store’s accountant gave the Saxton’s a bleak financial outlook.

Saxton plans to sell the property once the store closes, reports Jachman. To read more about this closing, click here.
