Summers Takes On A New RoleSource: Various

Recently, the Southern Nursery Association (SNA) announced that Executive Vice President Danny Summers informed the SNA Board of Directors of his decision to step down from his position to pursue another opportunity in the nursery industry.

The other opportunity turned out to be Carolina Nurseries. Carolina has hired Summers as director of sales. Summers will leave his position at SNA to oversee sales at Carolina Nurseries beginning Dec. 1, 2006.

Sam Galloway has been named interim executive vice president of the association. Galloway began his duties at SNA on Nov. 6, 2006.

Summers came on board as SNA executive vice president in October 1988. He proved to be an agent of growth and change during his 18 years with SNA. He was instrumental in fostering important relationships with state, national and international associations and trade shows, said SNA.

“Working for SNA and the industry in this capacity has been a fulfilling experience and I feel privileged to have played a role in achieving the success we have seen during my tenure,” Summers said. “This has been a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and I am honored to have served as executive vice president of this prestigious organization. Both Karen [Summers’ wife] and I want thank all of the many people who have provided support and friendship and have made this experience so special. The friendships we have made will be cherished a lifetime. I also want to thank all of the SNA staff for their support throughout the years. My time in the not-for-profit sector has helped me broaden my understanding of the industry. Now I feel it is time for me to leave, set my sights on new goals and apply what I have learned.”

SNA President D.E. “Skeeter” McCorkle shared his thoughts: “I would like to express the SNA Board’s gratitude for the time, energy and passion both Danny and his wife Karen have put into taking SNA to a new level. While this will be a challenging transition, we recognize and admire Danny’s decision to move on, as this opportunity will benefit the Summers family. We pray that Danny will be extremely successful in this new role in the green industry.”

In his new role, Summers will develop and manage initiatives to include augmenting customer relations, sales staff training and revenue profit margins. He will work closely with J. Guy, president of Carolina, and the existing sales staff at the nursery, with the goal of expanding strategic, revenue-garnering programs.
