Syngenta is offering two $7,500 horticulture-related scholarships again in 2012. The Glenn Goldsmith Breeding Excellence Scholarship is for a student working toward a degree in plant breeding and the Goldsmith Seeds Floriculture Business Advancement Scholarship is awarded to a student working toward a degree in ornamental horticulture business

Syngenta has announced it will be offering two $7,500 horticulture-related scholarships again in 2012. The Glenn Goldsmith Breeding Excellence Scholarship is a $7,500 award for a student working toward a degree in plant breeding. The Goldsmith Seeds Floriculture Business Advancement Scholarship will award $7,500 to a student working toward a degree in ornamental horticulture business.

The scholarship competition is open to all students pursuing a horticulture-related undergraduate or MS/Ph.D. degree. To be eligible the student must have a minimum GPA 3.0 (in a 4.0 scale) and be enrolled in an accredited four-year university during the 2012-2013 academic year. A panel consisting of Syngenta leaders as well as industry representatives and professors will judge all applications.

To apply for the scholarships the student must submit a cover letter, letter of recommendation and a 1,000 to 1,500 word essay.

The cover letter should include : •
The scholarship for which the applicant wishes to be considered; • The name of the university the applicant attends; • Degree the applicant is working toward; • Applicant’s target graduation date.

Applicants should also submit a letter of recommendation on university letterhead from the applicant’s academic advisor or professor. The students also must write a 1,000 to 1,500 word essay on on Syngenta’s mission statement, “Bringing Plant Potential to Life.” In the essay, applicants must describe what this statement means to them in relation to their career path. The deadline for applications is June 1, 2012. Scholarship recipients will be chosen and notified on June 29, 2012. Scholarship recipients will be announced to the public at the OFA (Ohio Florists Association) Short Course in Columbus, Ohio, in July. Participants need not be present to win.
