The University of Florida (UF) will host its 2014 Industry Poinsettia Trial Field Day Dec. 9 from 9:15 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the UF Environmental Horticulture Greenhouse Complex in Gainesville. The trials are sponsored by poinsettia breeder companies, and this year there are 129 varieties from Beekenkamp, Dümmen, Selecta/Ball and Syngenta.

Emphasis is on the newer and more important varieties, with many being shown for the first time. On the industry day for commercial growers, GPN’s consulting editor Dr. Jim Barrett will lead a discussion on the poinsettia varieties, and education sessions from Dr. Lance Osborne and Dr. Paul Fisher will cover alternatives to neonicitinoid pesticides and new production technologies such as automated irrigation, mobile apps and fertilizer strategies.

Registration is free at http://ufpoinsettia.eventbrite.com. Registration also will be available onsite. The university’s Poinsettia Show and Sale for Master Gardeners and the public will take place Dec. 11 and 12.
