Wal-Mart Says “We Are Not Green”Source: Wall Street Journal

Last month, Stan Pohmer, author of the monthly “Pohmer On…” column, sent our staff an Wall Street Journal article that turned everything we’d been told about Wal-Mart right on its head. After touting for many months the company’s efforts to be more eco-friendly, CEO Lee Scott Jr. proclaimed to attendees of the ECO:nomics conference that the company was not doing enough to be green.

One attendee had asked why, despite all their efforts, the company’s carbon emissions continued to rise, he answered frankly that while the company was trying to be more sustainable, it still needed to grow as well.

The retailer’s efforts will pay off slowly, he said, but he had no idea when the company’s goal to be 100 percent free of waste and running on renewable energy would actually materialize.

What efforts are you making to be more sustainable? As Wal-Mart’s example proves, this transformation doesn’t happen overnight, but if you can show your customers you’re doing something to be more eco-friendly, maybe your example will be enough to make you a leader in your neighborhood.
