Winter ValueBy Abby (Kleckler) McGarry

Some of you on the East Coast are likely still shoveling out from Winter Storm Jonas. Whether you have 2 feet of snow out your window, rain or regular weather, we all have to be very excited about only 52 more days until spring.

I, however, have loved seeing what garden centers are doing in the meantime.

Barlow’s in Sea Girt, New Jersey, has been reminding its customers that now is a great time to stock up on birdseed, and even our feathery friends need some love during the cold days.

Johnson’s Florist and Garden Centers in Maryland had a run on snow melt and shovels before the blizzard, and I’m sure they weren’t the only ones.

These are also great days to bump up interest in houseplants. While at AmericasMart last week, I could not believe how many air plants were on display. There is no doubt, they are HOT items right now. Put them inside out of the frigid temperatures with a little light and occassional water, and they’ll be the next hit for your customers.

I always love to hear about what your garden center is doing. Right now I’m working on an article about garden centers and farmers markets before the season is upon us. Let me know if this is something you’re involved with at [email protected].

Deadlines Are Meant to Be Broken

Or they’re at least meant to be extended! Our sister publication GPN has given you another three days to nominate someone for GPN’s 40 Under 40 Class of 2016.

If you know an awesome person — under age 40 — making a huge difference in the horticulture industry, fill out this nomination form.

Honorees will be recognized in the May issue of GPN and at Culivate’16, July 9-12, in Columbus, Ohio.

Let’s get some more retailers on this great list!

Cheers,

Abby
