Terrain In The TimesBy pmihalek

It looks like an independent garden center, but I know it isn’t an independent garden center. I know it really isn’t a big box store, either, ever under the Urban Outfitters umbrella. Ever since Terrain at Styer’s opened back in 2008, I’ve always been interested in anything and everything Terrain related. Now with the opening of a second Terrain location in Westport, CT, it’s hard to deny the real investment Urban Outfiiters is making in the garden retail industry…at least, for now, in the Northeast.

While this “chain” doesn’t play by the IGC playbook, a recent review of its Garden Cafe in The New York Times called “A Place to Dig In, With a Fork or a Spade” really reinforces the brand’s effort to cash in on perceived value and the importance of promoting local. Something we could all take a few cues from. The food critic wraps up her review commenting on the expensive menu items. She says, “The setting is undeniably peaceful, especially at dinner, so perhaps there is a premium exacted for serenity.” Which was followed by a rating of “Worth It.” Click here to read the review.

Real Men Wear…

It’s hard to miss the pink cleats, pink gloves and pink wristbands when you turn on any NFL game duing the month of October. That’s right, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a month when even the toughest of the tough have no problem donning a little pink to show their support of a great cause that affects many of our lives – indirectly or directly. Do you participate in breast cancer awareness at your store? I’d love to include your story in an upcoming issue of Lawn & Garden Retailer. Click here to tell me all about it.
