Los Angeles — Home of the Terrarium?By pmihalek

Last week I spent three days tooling around the Greater Los Angeles area in search of my next favorite garden center. (And I thought Chicago traffic was bad.) From Santa Monica to West Hollywood to Newport Beach, I came across a mixed bag of garden retailers.

There were small spots like The Juicy Leaf in Venice that put the urban gardener first with a refined selection catering to succulents and air plants to a funky store called Potted that really embodies its motto “indoor style for outdoor living” and also has a hand in the design process of many of the products it carries.

Then, of course, there were your more traditional garden retailers like Merchandiser of the Year finalist Marina Del Ray Garden Center, which was voted No. 1 garden center by LA Weekly, and the esteemed Roger’s Gardens that absolutely floored me. But more on them later.

I’ll be posting pics from my various stops on the Lawn & Garden Retailer’s Facebook page. First up, Armstrong Garden Centers. Of their 20+ locations, I visited two beauties — San Juan Capistrano and Newport Beach. See my pics from each place here. And stay tuned for more photos from my Los Angeles trip in the very near future.

Enthusiastically,

Pete
