Happy Holidays from Lawn & Garden RetailerBy pmihalek

Merry Christmas! Aside from this eNewsletter, I hope today is work-free and one full of family and food and a couple presents, too.

But while I have your attention, let’s talk shop for just a couple of seconds. How were holiday sales? Up, down, sideways? Did Home Depot’s online Christmas tree ordering and delivery affect what went on in your tree lot this season?

I just read a short news bit on Laurel Oak Garden Center, which offers customers a $15 gift certificate when they bring their trees back to the store for recycling.

Returned trees are chipped and used as mulch. “We started the program four years ago as an effort to be more green,” Laurel Oak‘s Karina Istvan said. “It’s another layer of being green because it helps us reduce the amount of mulch we have to truck in.”

Nice way to get them ready to spend in the spring.

Bird Watching

Birding is another critical category for IGCs when the temps begin to dip. That said, I’m hoping you can help me with a birding feature I’m working on. I would love to see your birding department. If you have great signage or a clever arrangement of products, I want to see it. And I want to feature it in an upcoming issue of Lawn & Garden Retailer. So in between sales, grab your nearest camera or smartphone and send your best birding shots to me at [email protected].

And from all of us here at Lawn & Garden Retailer, I hope we’re just one of many wishes for you and yours to have a very merry Christmas and equally happy New Year!

Enthusiastically,

Pete
