“Fly the W”By Abby (Kleckler) McGarry

As a Chicago resident and lifelong Cubs fan, you better believe that this has been an exciting baseball season. The Cubs are making their first appearance in the World Series since 1945 (game 2 is tonight), and if they come out on top, it’ll be their first championship in 108 years.

We’ve watched a fairly young team win game after game, all while having fun doing it. What makes this Cubs team so much more successful than those in the recent past? Is there some sort of winning formula that can help other teams/organizations/companies succeed too?

As these questions came to mind, I happened upon an article written by Bob Phibbs, the Retail Doctor, titled, “How the Chicago Cubs Show How To Fix Brick and Mortar Retail Sales.”

Now that’s what I was talking about! Phibbs wrote this article back in May when it was too early to accurately predict if the Cubs would go the whole way.

I highly recommend taking a few minutes to read it in its entirety, but one major takeaway is that “the fun comes from having well-trained teammates all rooting for each other.”

Phibbs asserts that “pessimistic people don’t buy,” so it’s crucial for your employees to work together to create a fun atmosphere that gives a feeling of hope to shoppers.

What types of things do you do to create a bond between all members of your team? How do you get your employees just as excited about new initiatives or goals as you are?

Inspiration Without the Travel

At a recent industry event, I got to talking to a garden center owner about displays, and I pulled up Lawn & Garden Retailer’s Inspiration Book to show him an example of what I was talking about.

He proceeded to flip through photo after photo of inspirational ideas, and he asked me why he hadn’t heard of this resource.

For this reason, I’m here to tell you to check out www.lgrmag.com/inspirationbook for hundreds of photos from gardens centers across the U.S.

Cheers,

Abby
