Targeting All CustomersBy Abby (Kleckler) McGarry

Last month, The Wall Street Journal published an article titled “America’s Retailers Have a New Target Customer: The 26-Year-Old Millennial.”

We often find ourselves trying to figure out how to get millennials into garden centers, but this article in particular raised other questions. Is every retailer, no matter the industry, having the same challenges? Why 26 year olds in particular?

The answer to the first question appears to be “yes,” according to the article, and 26 is the target age because at 4.8 million people it’s the single largest age cohort in the American population.

If you haven’t read the article, get to it. You’ll read approaches from Scotts Miracle-Gro about targeting hesitant vegetable gardeners, Home Depot about taking classes even more basic than it ever thought necessary and many more companies.

Also, head over to the November/December issue of Lawn & Garden Retailer if you haven’t already. “10 Ways to Create a Dynamic Customer Experience” and “Retail Relevance” will both be helpful in capturing 26 year olds and beyond.

New Jersey Bound

I never need an excuse to go visit all of you, but this year I’ve decided to tack on some garden center visits before heading to Toms River, New Jersey, to eat lots of turkey and even more pie.

Are you in the New York/New Jersey area? Or do you have a garden center you must see when you head that way? If so, shoot me an email and let me know!

Cheers,

Abby
