Seeing UltravioletBy Abby (Kleckler) McGarry

The 2017 Pantone Color of the Year, Greenery, fit seamlessly into our industry. I even saw a few garden center displays drawing attention to the company and highlighting plants with the yellow-green foliage.

This means that when 2018’s Color of the Year came out last week, the pressure was on. For next year, Pantone has selected Ultra Violet (PANTONE 18-3838). It’s a blue-based purple shade that Pantone refers to as “dramatically provocative and thoughtful.”

One of the many descriptions of the color from Pantone’s announcement was: “Complex and contemplative, Ultra Violet suggests the mysteries of the cosmos, the intrigue of what lies ahead, and the discoveries beyond where we are now. The vast and limitless night sky is symbolic of what is possible and continues to inspire the desire to pursue a world beyond our own.”

With a narration like that, how can you not think of ‘Headliner NightSky’ petunia from Selecta? Or ‘Constellation Aries’ petunia by Westflowers? Not to mention a number of other plants with that same purple color. First Editions ‘Virtual Violet’ lilac even shares part of the name.

What other plants have you thinking Ultra Violet?

I’d love to hear if you plan to utilize the 2018 Color of the Year in your garden center. Shoot me an email at [email protected].

Event Central

You’ll see in our January issue that we’re starting a new column focused solely on events. From talking to all of you, I’ve discovered that the sky is the limit when it comes to creativity. If you have a rockstar event, please share it with me.

Cheers,

Abby
