The People’s SharkBy Abby (Kleckler) McGarry

The last couple weeks have been full of industry events including the IGC Show in Chicago and Farwest in Portland. I spent time at the IGC Show and wanted to share with you one of my highlights from the show, Daymond John’s keynote.

John, founder of hip hop apparel company FUBU and now of “Shark Tank” fame on ABC, shared with a packed house his S.H.A.R.K. points for success. Set a Goal. Do your Homework. Love what you’re doing — Amor. Remember You are the Brand. And Keep Swimming.

He set his whole talk to a hip hop soundtrack, was extremely energetic and gave many quick and easy takeaways. One thing he said about garden centers and social media is to treat it like a TV show. You need to spend “28 minutes” of giving content that your customers care about and “two minutes” of selling. That’s something to think about!

Now it’s time for me to pick up his latest book, “Rise and Grind.” I’ll let you know if there are other easy takeaways.

Share With Me

I know the last thing we want to think about now is the holidays when fall hasn’t even kicked off, but I know you’ve been planning for quite some time. I’d love to hear about successful holiday events you have at the garden center! Shoot me an email at [email protected].

Also, you’ve been reading our print issue of the magazine, right? If not, check out the August issue right now. I’d love to hear what you think of the redesign.

Cheers,

Abby
