Consumers Continue Growing Environmentally AwareSource: Garden Media Group

Consumers are growing more interested in corporate environmental responsibility, with 93 percent of Americans polling that companies have an obligation to help preserve the environment, according to the May 2007 Cone Consumer Environmental Survey. Eighty-eight percent of consumers are as or more interested in the environment than they were a year ago.

Susan McCoy, a leading trend-spotter in the gardening industry, believes that being ‘green’ is a life-changing, enduring trend for industries across the board, but especially in the gardening industry. “Homeowners are looking for environmentally responsible ways to have a “green” backyard. They want products that are good for the earth and safe for the family and pets while at the same time not too expensive.”

Sixty-three percent of consumers polled in the Cone survey answered that they would pay more for eco-friendly products that were “readily available” where they shop and 72 percent would pay more if those products would save them money in the long term. Nearly half of those surveyed had purchased environmentally-friendly products in the last year.

McCoy explains “a shift has been noticed in consumers seeking out companies that are ‘in it for a greater good,'” and that “gardening is intrinsically good. We are good to Mother Earth when we garden – working with and being surrounded by the environment comes with the territory.”
