5 Minutes With … Susan Bachman West
Susan Bachman West is CEO of Bachman’s and a fifth-generation family member leading the company.
What is the most rewarding part of your job?
For me, it’s all about the people — both the team I get to work with every day and the customers we serve. I feel incredibly lucky to be surrounded by passionate, dedicated team members, many of whom have been with us for years. That kind of longevity creates a strong sense of community and shared purpose. And then there’s the joy of helping customers, whether they are picking out their first houseplant or designing a garden they’ve always dreamed of. Seeing the happiness that plants and flowers bring into people’s lives is incredibly rewarding. I truly love what I do and feel grateful to share my passion for plants with others.
What keeps you up at night?
Severe weather, especially hail! I think all garden retailers share that fear. It can wreak havoc on inventory and infrastructure in a matter of minutes. But beyond the weather, what weighs on me more is the concern that not enough young people are entering the horticulture industry. This field is so vibrant and full of opportunities, from growing and design to operations, marketing and technology. It’s incredibly fulfilling, and I worry that many young people just don’t realize how diverse and rewarding a career in horticulture can be. We all need to do more to shine a light on those possibilities.
What has surprised you about garden retail?
One thing that continues to surprise and delight me is how much there is to learn no matter how long you’ve been in the business. I truly love that about this industry. Every season brings something new — whether it’s a change in customer trends, a new plant variety, a supply chain challenge, or a creative way to merchandise. I’m naturally curious, and garden retail constantly gives me the chance to grow and improve. That ongoing learning keeps the work fresh and exciting year after year.
If you weren’t in the profession, what would you be doing?
Honestly, I can’t imagine doing anything else! I grew up in the garden center business, and now, I’m a fifth-generation family member leading the company. My great-great-grandfather started Bachman’s back in 1885, and this year we’re celebrating our 140th anniversary. The business has evolved a lot over the years, but I think Henry Bachman Sr. would be proud to see that it’s still family-run and thriving. It’s in my roots — literally and figuratively.
What’s something few people know about you?
I’m a pretty open book, so there aren’t many secrets! But one thing people might not know is that I’ve been to six of the seven continents. Visiting all seven is definitely on my bucket list. Antarctica is the one that remains. One day I’ll get there! I love experiencing new places and cultures, and travel has always been a big source of inspiration for me.
Favorite plant to grow? Why?
That’s such a tough question! I truly love so many different plants and flowers, it really depends on the season … and sometimes even the day. I can easily get swept up in the beauty that nature provides and how something as small as a seed can grow into something that brings so much joy. I love growing plants, but even more meaningful is seeing how others connect with them, watching someone light up when they find the perfect flower or appreciate the beauty of a blooming garden. That moment of connection, of bringing a little joy into someone’s day, is what makes it all worthwhile. So, while I can’t choose just one favorite, anything that brings happiness to others will always have my heart.
