The CAST countdown continues By Teresa McPherson

We’re just days away from California Spring Trials (CAST) as I write this, and I’m ready to leave the volatile Midwestern spring weather (tornado warnings one day, snow showers the next) and soak up some sweet California sunshine — and plenty of new plant breeding.

While we’re on the topic of CAST, we’ve got a sneak peek of some season-extending varieties that will be on display. Flip to page 32 to see them. And watch for future coverage of the event in Lawn & Garden Retailer — we’ll not only be covering details of some of the most notable new varieties, but also taking a look at some of the merchandising displays that the breeder companies set up at their stops.

Home gardeners’ success rate starts with making good plant-purchase decisions at the garden center, said Andrew Levi, founder and CEO of PlantTAGG. On page 22, we explore the PlantTAGG technology and the benefits it offers to both garden retail staff and home gardeners.

Summer is just around the corner — making now a good time to start planning events for the warmer months. On page 28, Rockledge Gardens co-owner Devon Klingman shares how their summertime First Fridays event evolved from a weekly Happy Hour and now offers a variety of activities that bring in both new and returning customers.

And speaking of plans, columnist Stan Pohmer shared his thoughts this month on developing a plan for your business — and learning how to pivot from said plan if changes are necessary.

“We’re fortunate that your customer genuinely likes what you offer them,” he writes, “it’s time for you to show them why our products are important to them — important enough to spend more of their limited discretionary dollars with you.” Read more on page 52.
