Suntory Flowers adds green walls systems with acquisition
Suntory Flowers Ltd. announced it has acquired Suntory Flowers Midorie (Shanghai) Co. Ltd. and will develop indoor and outdoor green wall systems. The company will use Pafcal, a new material developed by Suntory as an alternative to soil with the goal of “creating comfortable spaces with greenery” internationally.
With any substrate, the balance between water and air is important for plant growth. Unlike ordinary water-retaining sponges, Pafcal can maintain an almost uniform balance of water and air from top to bottom, even at a tall height. It’s also clean and light weight, and because it is molded, it will not fall apart and stain the surroundings like soil does. The indoor and outdoor greening system using Pafcal reportedly allows for easily changing the type of plants freely according to the season, event, or store renovations.
“Utilizing our company’s strengths in development, marketing, and overseas sales network for flowers and plants, we will further enhance the innovative development of Pafcal,” said Yasunori Yomo, Suntory Flowers president. “We will also expand the wall greening and individual greening businesses, which we have been operating in Japan, China and Southeast Asia, to Europe, the Americas and Australia.”
Naoki Oikawa, president of Suntory Flowers Midorie (Shanghai) Co., Ltd., said, “Our wall greening system, which began with the development of Pafcal, a new material that replaces soil, has given form to a system that allows people living in urban areas to participate in the creation of a green environment. From greenery just to put up, to decorate or that can be freely designed, we believe the best way to contribute to our blue planet is through the greening of cities.
