Zamzows: 2025 Innovator of the Year By Teresa McPherson

What year was your garden center founded?

Zamzows was founded in 1933.

What is your garden center known for?

We’re known as a trusted, family-owned lawn, garden and pet supply store serving the Treasure Valley of Idaho since 1933. Our customers rely on us for exceptional service, deep product knowledge and a level of care that goes beyond expectations. We pride ourselves on helping our community succeed — offering free educational classes, personalized lawn consultations and innovative solutions to common garden and pet challenges. We’re especially proud of the quality of our proprietary products, from locally made fertilizers and soil amendments to our own line of premium pet food and livestock feed.

How do you set your store apart from the big boxes?

Our biggest differentiator is the customer experience — we take the time to truly listen, educate and guide our customers. We offer exclusive proprietary products, developed and manufactured locally, that consistently outperform national brands. Our team’s expertise, our lawn consultation services and the free in-store seminars we host throughout the year create an experience that’s simply unmatched by the big box stores.

How do you ensure teamwork among employees?

Teamwork is built into our culture. We promote a “teams win” mentality, where success is shared and challenges are tackled together. Open communication is key — we regularly talk through goals and needs so everyone’s aligned. We also crosstrain our staff so they can step into multiple roles when needed, which builds flexibility and fosters mutual respect across departments.

What are your best practices for managing staff?

We focus on clear communication, accountability and mutual support. Regular check-ins, ongoing training and open-door leadership keep our team engaged and growing. We make sure each team member understands how their role contributes to our mission, and we celebrate wins — both big and small. Recognizing individual and team achievements is essential to keeping morale high and retention strong.

How is your store involved in your local community?

We take pride in giving back. Zamzows supports local schools, universities, nonprofits and environmental efforts through donations, sponsorships and volunteerism. We partner with community gardens and educational programs to promote sustainable practices and environmental awareness. Whether it’s hosting workshops or donating to a local 4-H club, we’re committed to growing strong roots in our community and being a resource our neighbors can count on.
