Building on its mission to help educate people on healthy living and home-grown garden success, Burpee Home Gardens recently unveiled its new “Grow Anywhere Tour” and the new Burpee food truck.

The Burpee food truck will make 25 stops on its 13-week cross-country tour and give away 39,000 pounds of fresh vegetables and 13,000 vegetable plants to people living in food deserts.

Food deserts are areas designated as having no easy and close access to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables in a geographic redius. Often these areas only afford access to fast foods and processed ingredients – contributing to poor dietary habits.

The United States Department of Agriculture has identified more than 6,000 food deserts in the U.S. impacting nearly 13.6 million people.

“The Grow Anywhere Tour and the Burpee food truck is all about sharing food for the long term,” remarks Diane Hund Burpee Home Garden’s director of marketing.

“By providing starter plants and helpful advice, we’re bringing more solutions to folks without access to fresh fruits and vegetables. The Grow Anywhere Tour also encourages community efforts to create and maintain vegetable gardens that can become self sustaining,” Hund adds.

The Burpee food truck is designed to deliver large quantities of plants and produce to these deserts. In early Spring 2013, the truck will begin its trek with an appearance at the Philadelphia Flower Show and then hit the road for Charlotte, N.C., in mid-March. By the conclusion of the tour, the truck is expected to travel nearly 10,000 mile.

Communities can support the tour via donations and help select future truck destinations using the company’s website and on its social media pages. They can also follow the truck’s progress on an interactive map and information app on Facebook.com/BurpeeHomeGardens and on Twitter at #GrowAnywhere.
