Scenic Nursery Closes Its DoorsSource: The Modesto Bee

After more than 60 years in business, Modesto’s Scenic Nursery will close its doors due to a “tough” last several years and “dramatic changes” in how business is conducted.

After more than 60 years in business, Modesto’s Scenic Nursery will close its doors for good, reports Patty Guerra, The Modesto Bee.

“The last several years have been tough,” said second generation owner Jim Rogers, 68. “We made dramatic changes in how we did business. But I just don’t have it in me to fight through another winter.”

Ron Hoffmann, owner of Morris Nursery in Riverbank, considered Rogers a friendly competitor. “We had a catastrophic fire 4½ years ago,” Hoffmann said. “Scenic Nursery was one of the first ones to come and offer their services and employees to get us back off the ground and running again. It was more ‘us against them’ than against each other.”

With a shrinking economy, “People are just barely hanging on,” Rogers said. “People just don’t feel as wealthy.”

Guerra notes that Scenic plans to close officially sometime around Nov. 18 and at that time about a dozen people will lose their jobs. Click here to read Guerra’s entire story on Scenic Nursery’s closing.
