All AboardBy Abby (Kleckler) McGarry

I’m writing this letter on Day 1 of the GCA Summer Tour in Virginia (and you’re likely reading it on Day 2).

The buses will head to approximately a dozen garden centers over three days— meaning I’ll be picking up tons of ideas to share with you. Follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

One of the many conversations at the tour’s opening reception centered on a succession plan for your business. It’s great to get a ton of different people into the same room — some retiring shortly and others taking over the family garden center.

I want to ask you: If you’ve gone through a transition, what was the hardest part? Let me know at [email protected].

From the West Coast

When I’m talking about work travel and great ideas, I wanted to draw your attention to two articles in the June issue.

The first, “All Eyes on Retail,” has display ideas from the 2017 California Spring Trials. I had one person on the GCA Tour tell me they already implemented the ladder idea from the article. (I won’t spoil it for you, so take a look.)

The issue also has an article written by Lindsay Chrisp with Tagawa Gardens about why classes and events matter. The article is worth a read, and a trip to their garden center in May solidified to me that they have some great ideas.

Lindsay will also be leading a session at Cultivate’17 coming up from July 15-18 in Columbus, Ohio. Will you be there? Shoot me an email; I’d love to catch up.

Cheers,

Abby
