The Bridge to Honor Burpee Chairman and CEOSource: The Bridge

Cynthia Wainwright, president of the board of directors of The Bridge, a non-profit agency providing mental health services and housing in Manhattan, the Bronx and Queens, recently announced that George Ball, chairman and CEO of W. Atlee Burpee & Co., and chairman of the board of the Burpee Foundation, will be the 2011 Individual Partner in Caring honoree at the 57th Anniversary Partners in Caring Dinner this summer.

The fundraising Dinner will take place June 9. Wainwright said, “George Ball and The Burpee Foundation had the foresight to support The Bridge’s Urban Farm and Horticultural program when it began in 2005, and through his wisdom and support, the program has grown dramatically.”

Ball has been active in building The Bridge Urban Farm Horticultural Program. The goals of the Urban Farms are to teach clients about the benefits of eating vegetables and fruit, provide free and easy access to vegetables to increase their intake and improve their health; to reduce reliance on food banks and other food resources, and to teach them about good nutrition. The farms also provide The Bridge clients with work training opportunities in horticulture and paid jobs.
