Ian Prosser Wins Sylvia Cup Design CompetitionSource: SAF

After serving as a judge in 2006, Ian Prosser, of Botanica International Florist in Tampa, Fla., is the winner of the 40th Annual Sylvia Cup Competition, which took place during SAF Palm Springs 2007, the Society of American Florists’ 123rd Annual Convention. Prosser walked away with this year’s top prize – $2,500 (provided by Smithers-Oasis), and engraved silver trophy, free registration to SAF Palm Beach 2008 and recognition at SAF’s Industry Awards Dinner.

“I haven’t participated in a [design competition] in over 20 years,” says Prosser. “I judged [Sylvia Cup] last year, and I just wanted to see how it felt to be on the other side of the table.”

The following contestants won honorable mention awards and received $250 each, an award plaque and recognition at SAF’s Industry Awards Dinner: Linda Zoerb of La Crosse Floral in La Crosse, Wis., and Katharina Stuart of Orchid Florist in Berkeley, Calif.

Coordinated by SAF’s Professional Floral Communicators-International, the Sylvia Cup Design Competition tested the skills of 20 designers. Contestants received two hours, the same product assortment – featuring roses provided by Eufloria Flowers – and the surprise theme “California Dreaming in the Sixties” to create three designs: a bridal bouquet, wedding centerpiece and hairpiece.
