Concept Plants’ Ipomoea Receives DGA Award

Treasure Island Sweet Potatoes, represented in North America by Concept Plants, were recently recognized with a Green Thumb Award in the Edible Plants category from the Direct Gardening Association at the DGA 2020 Winter Meeting in Orlando, Florida.

Brian Kirkland, sales support and business development for Concept Plants, said,  “Concept Plants is proud to represent the Treasure Island Sweet Potatoes. These selections are from breeding work at the Louisiana State University AgCenter from an original concept development and collaboration work by their partner FitzGerald Nurseries in Ireland.”

Treasure Island Sweet Potatoes are a breakthrough in breeding as they are the first edible AND ornamental sweet potatoes on the market. Not only are the leaves colorful, they are edible, too. In the fall you can dig up and enjoy the colorful sweet potatoes. The plants in the Treasure Island series are named after different Polynesian Islands. Each plant hides a “treasure” underneath the soil, and the varieties sport different leaf and root colors.

The Green Thumb Awards recognize outstanding new garden products available directly to consumers via mail order or online. Winners of the 2020 Green Thumb Awards were chosen by an independent panel of garden writers and editors. The judging criteria includes product uniqueness, technological innovation, ability to solve a gardening problem or provide a gardening opportunity and potential appeal to gardeners.
