Michigan Farm Bureau Continues to Advocate for Growers, Retailers to Open Their Doors
More than 56,000 individuals responded to the Michigan Farm Bureau’s request to send messages to the governor, state representatives and senators and the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, imploring them to allow the retail sale of plants, nursery stock, and flowers.
In a statement released on April 21, the Michigan Farm Bureau thanked everyone who took the time to reach out to legislators and let them know that the greenhouse and garden center segments are essential businesses and should be allowed to remain open during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Earlier this month, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer issued an Executive Order that currently does not allow garden centers and growers to be open for business.
In the EO, “Stay Home, Stay Safe” Executive Order (EO) 2020-42, Whitmer imposed additional restrictions on retail garden centers and growers, saying, “Large stores must also close areas of the store that are dedicated to carpeting, flooring, furniture, garden centers, plant nurseries, or paint.”
The Michigan Farm Bureau is continuing to reach out to government officials to ease the restrictions and allow the horticulture business to open up for business as soon as possible.
The Bureau said it “continues to believe all of agriculture is essential and will continue to advocate on your behalf as the Michigan Legislature and Whitmer Administration develop, debate and implement plans to reopen the state’s economy.”
