June 2013
…of the year By Pete Mihalek

For 2013, the Lawn & Garden Retailer Merchandiser of the Year competition has your name all over it.

You did it. You made it through another Mother’s Day and you’re on the heels of Memorial Day weekend. For many garden centers across the country, presently speaking, you’re slowly descending from the busy season summit.

Are you starting to assess what worked or what didn’t work? Did you capture your customers’ attention with well-executed displays? Were vegetables big again this year?

Listen, I could pepper you with questions about spring until the cows come home, but the space here doesn’t allow it. So, I’ll just ask another, different type of question … one that’s currently at the top of my list:

Have you thought about becoming Lawn & Garden Retailer’s next Merchandiser of the Year?

Merchandising Madness

During some downtime the other day, I read most of the 2013 IGC Show program — specifically about the IGC Know2Grow Retail Conference.

As I made my way through the list of respected speakers, read up on their backgrounds and visited their individual websites, retail expert Tom Shay’s site was the last one I checked out.

Clicking around on his Profits Plus website (www.profitsplus.org), I found a rather handy page titled “Tom Shay’s Bakers Dozen Keys to Great Visual Merchandising.”

From placing high dollar items at eye level to including add-on sale items with most of your displays, Shay’s keys are an excellent checklist for any merchandiser (of the year).

What methods do you have to your merchandising madness?

Here’s one more question for the road: Where’s your camera?
