Dümmen Orange recently participated in the 2023 Global Produce & Floral Show, with a redesigned booth exhibiting new varieties of kalanchoes, Suntaste series pot mums, violets, poinsettias, pot carnations, anthuriums, orchids, Welcome to the Jungle (succulents), cut flowers, calla lilies, roses, carnations, and potted calla lilies.

More than 20,000 delegates from more than 60 countries attended the event, which took place Oct. 19-21 in Anaheim, California.

“A lot of people don’t know that we are the only breeder in the world right now that does any breeding behind African violets,” said Marta Maria Garcia, Dümmen Orange head of marketing and retail North America. “That’s pretty interesting. We have a big responsibility to improve this crop that is doing so well. It’s kind of a retro crop, right? It’s making its way back.

Dümmen Orange participates in IFPA Global Produce & Floral Show“We have six new introductions that we’re launching for next selling season, where we’re focusing on not only beautiful color flowers but also bi-colors. They’re exciting innovations. The bi-colors, double blooms or ruffled flower petals have really caught everyone’s attention. We did it on purpose because we know it’s a category that’s making a comeback.”

Garcia said she was able to talk to one of the retailers that has been trying to grow this category more “but the grower base that grows these is very limited. We’re working hard at expanding that, so they can have a 12-month program of these (African violets) in their stores.”

Other top categories that the Dümmen Orange team discussed with industry buyers from major supermarket chains during the show included:

  • Houseplants. Houseplants are still on the rise as they continue to see increased sales in supermarkets around the country. Dümmen Orange offers its Welcome to the Jungle line of indoor plants which will help fuel that trend as retailers remain excited about what lies ahead.
  • Kalanchoes. Kalanchoes are a great longevity flowering potted plant, an ideal feature for the retail setting. New varieties include bi-colored blooms which means a double bloom and color-changing features. Dümmen Orange currently offers its well-known Calandiva Kalanchoe varieties and new highlights like Joie, a color-changing bloom variety.
  • Cut flowers. Displaying cut flowers at IFPA’s Global Produce & Floral Show was a top priority for Dümmen Orange. Since cut flowers are a quarter of the company’s global business, this category certainly garners attention. Recent award winners for Dümmen Orange’s cut flower genetics include Sahara Sensation, Gerbera Himalia, Novia, Champagne and Lamira.
