Ball expands tropical portfolio through Aris horticulture acquisition

Ball Horticultural Co. has expanded its tropical portfolio through acquisitions of genetics and selected commercial business from Aris Horticulture, with the agreement taking effect Aug. 3.

Under the agreement, Ball FloraPlant acquired the complete Tradewinds Hibiscus genetics portfolio, including commercial varieties, breeding stock, future introductions and the Tradewinds trademark. The hibiscus program is recognized as a leading offering in North America.

Ball Seed also assumed commercial business responsibilities for Aris’ tropical liner, prefinished and finished programs, including hibiscus, mandevilla and tropical fern classes, along with select Igloo mums and Green Leaf Plants Florida perennials. Aris will continue producing the transferred products while Ball Seed manages direct sales and distribution. The products also will be available through Star Roses and Plants.

Allan Davidson, president of Ball Horticultural Co., said the acquisition expands the company’s tropical portfolio while combining genetics, production expertise and customer support.

Scott Schaefer, president and CEO of Aris Horticulture, said the partnership allows each company to focus on its core strengths while maintaining the supply of its products.

Aris will continue accepting orders through Aug. 17 and will remain an independent company focused on producing and marketing Keepsake Plants and providing contract production services.
